Babylon 5

Author: Penumbra
Title: Giá cogli angeli, Ivanova?
Pairing: Susan/Talia
Comments: I never really cared for Babylon 5 fanfiction until I read this one a few years ago. (I never cared for Babylon 5 at all actually.) In this story, the author combines humor, an interesting plot, intimacy, and a view of the space station in a way that engages and delights.

Birds of Prey

Author: Pink Rabbit Productions
Title: Belonging

Author: Janine
Title: Cherry Lips
Pairing: Barbara/Helena
Comments: Janine's story does include elements of a mystery/crime but the main focus is on the relationship between Barbara and Helena. Their relationship is both playful and tinged with angst as they unravel the consequences of their attraction and whether or not it should be acted upon. Beautiful characterisation, with charming little light moments to put a smile on your face.

Buffy/Angel

Author: Eos

Title: The Way, Way Back
Pairing: Faith/Kate
Comments: In my opinion, this is the best characterization of Faith, bar none. Told from her point of view, the story pairs her with Kate Lockley, who, unfortunately, didn't get beyond season 2 on Angel (to my recollection, anyway). And though I never really thought of them as having potential, this fiction made me a believer. It is totally original, chock full of angst (Faith is the queen, after all), with plenty of humor, action, and cameo appearances thrown in for good measure. A great read.

CSI

Author: Zennie
Title: The Replacements
Pairing: Catherine/Sara
Comments: Zennie takes a very different look at the evolution of the Catherine/Sara relationship. A determined Sara is hell bent on proving that fantasies are better than reality while an equally determined Catherine actively pursues the other woman in an attempt to disprove the theory. Every reader needs to experience this well-written, powerful story.

Dragon Age

Author: MountainGoats
Title: Thorns
Pairing: City Elf Origin Warden/Leliana
Fandom: Dragon Age: Origins
Comments: One of the interesting things about Dragon Age: Origins' silent protagonist is that the player can overlay almost any personality onto The Warden. Kallian Tabris, this fic's city elf origin warden, is one of the most interesting Wardens I've read in fic. She's been badly damaged by a hard life in the elven alienage and the brutality of the human nobles of Denerim. But there's more than just a troubling past haunting her; she's also plagued by a remnant of an ancient evil that seems to be gradually taking over. MountainGoats doesn't slavishly stick to the events of the game, and the story is really enhanced by this - it allows the characters to develop and grow, while remaining recognisably themselves. The action in the story (and there's a lot of this, as befits the nature of the source material) is really well done and never seems to drag, but the romance and humour of the story are equally good. It's not perfect, but it's probably the best fic I've read in this fandom. Nutshell: if you want a long story with a compelling protagonist, great action and well-written dialogue, coupled with a sweet romance, then you'll probably like this fic.

Mass Effect

Author: Melaradark
Title: Dark Energy
Pairing: Shepard (F)/Liara
Comments: Yes this story takes place through the first game. But there is no way you've read anything like this. Melaradark creates a Shepard that is a Renegade. She cusses, likes to pick fights, smokes and drinks. She's got scars and is proud of them. But she is fiercely loyal and will do anything and everything to make sure her friends and crew survive. Delilah Shepard is fleshed out and fits well into the Dark Energy world. It's not just a straight re-telling like others have done. There are events that everyone will recognize and the characters we love will come into play, but Melaradark brings in other characters, fleshes out characters that have little face time in game. This story immerses you in a darker, richer, more enticing Mass Effect world like you haven't seen. Part of a series that you'll want to read in one go.

Once Upon a Time

Author: maleficently
Title: somewhere, someone must know the ending
Pairing(s): Regina Mills/Emma Swan, with some Mary Margaret Blanchard/David Nolan
Comments: The author has managed to create a non-magical AU that fully incorporates Henry's belief that his mother is the 'Evil Queen' and his birth-mother 'The Saviour' without blurring the lines between the real world and fantasy. Henry's beliefs are treated far more appropriately in the story than they ever were on the show, and even though I still felt like slapping him a few times, I could understand why they didn't. The story is slightly unusual in that it begins with Regina and Emma already married, but on the verge of breaking up, and then begins the complicated job of rebuilding their relationship. The characterisation is wonderful and the friendships, as well as central romance, are handled with a deft touch that really makes you care about those characters (I now have a special soft spot for Kathryn Nolan). This is a long story, so be prepared to burn the midnight oil, because you won't be able to stop until it's finished.

Title: Battle Towards Surrender
Pairing: Regina Mills/Emma Swan
Comments: The story uses an old premise - Regina and Emma pretend to be lovers (to keep the townsfolk from killing the Queen) - but manages to be both fresh and intriguing. Humour is intertwined with darker character moments that never gloss over the characters' tortured pasts and as a result make you truly care about the outcome to their plight.

Title: Polygraph Calibration for Beginners ff.net or AO3
Fandoms: Once Upon a Time / Warehouse 13
Pairing: Regina Mills/Emma Swan   Myka/Helena   Snow/Charming
Comments: Although Bering & Wells takes a bit of a side run to the Swan Queen story line the story is excellently written. The characters portrayals are fabulous and the friendship between Regina and Helena is a true gem. There is a perfect amount of action/adventure with witty sarcasm, sharp wit in general, well written descriptions of some pretty extravagant events, and of course romance and magic! I've already spoken with the author and begged for a sequel or another cross-over with these lovely pairings.

Title: A Fine Line
Pairing: Regina Mills/Emma Swan
Comments: A brilliant masterpiece of angst, hurt/comfort, and a slow building romance. The dialogue between Emma and Regina is genuine and realistic. Their desires to escape their own separate prisons, find solace in another person, and to be together is heartfelt throughout. This fic is one that every Swan Queen fan should read at least once (if not twice). You won't regret it.

Title: Once Upon a Zombie
Pairing: Regina Mills/Emma Swan   Red/Belle   Snow/Charming   Grumpy/Nova   Kathryn/Fredrick
Comments: This fic is one for anyone that enjoys the zombie genre in fandoms. At first the story is somewhat slow and a bit dis-jumbled, but I think that accurately reflects the situation the main characters find themselves in. Because if magic exists and fairy-tale characters are real SOMEONE had to go there and bring zombies into the mix. I mean the show already has a werewolf and their own form of zombies. The story is well developed and although the end of the world is taking place there is character growth, exploration, and a slow development of a romantic relationship and friendships.

Author: Chilly Flame
Title: The Sun Inside
Pairing: Regina Mills/Emma Swan   Snow/Charming
Comments: The first magic baby fic for Once that I read. It is still by far the best that I've read. But anything written by ChillyFlame is gold. I highly recommend this story if you enjoy SwanQueen with a little taste of babyfic/magic baby. It switches between Emma and Regina's POVs so we get a taste of what they are both feeling and thinking. It doesn't solely focus on the pregnancy but the relationships of all the characters and the impending battle that threatens them all.

Title: Adventures with Cora Mills
Pairing: Regina Mills/Emma Swan   Cora/Others
Comments: One of the best crack fics...ever. If you have not read this story yet. Go. Read it. Now. You MUST. You will find yourself in tears due to how hard you laugh. It is the perfect read for when you're not in the best of moods because it can lift your spirits, put a smile on your face, and make your cheeks flame a bright red with laughter and amusement. The situations that Cora gets herself into is...it's crack. It's unbelievable but at the same time you can't help but BELIEVE it. My favorite parts usually deal with Cora calling Regina and Emma kinky bitches, Black Wolf, and Snow's animal problem. Check it out and come up with your own favorite parts. (WIP)

Title: Fretting Over the Fate of Dinosaurs
Pairing: Regina Mills/Emma Swan
Comments: The story begins post-curse with Regina separated from her son and fighting against her strong desire for magic. Emma is, of course, the key to helping Regina through her dark-magic-withdrawl and reuniting her with Henry. The two women's relationship is at its prickly best and the healthy dose of lust that's been added to the mix simply makes it more delicious. Another fun read from Harper.

Title: we'll make our home on the water
Pairing: Regina Mills/Emma Swan
Comments: The story begins aboard the Jolly Roger with the rescue party headed toward Neverland in what turns out to be a very long voyage; that gives the Saviour and the former Evil Queen just enough time to start to forge a new bond. Throw in a plan to rescue Henry and a land where their normal magic is useless and you have a very satisfying conclusion to season two's cliffhanger.

Title: Whatever This Is
Pairing: Regina Mills/Emma Swan
Comments: The story veers off from canon at the beginning of 'The Cricket Game' and explores Emma and Regina's attempts to become friends. Key moments in their budding friendship are highlighted and the ground well prepared for the romantic love you know will soon flourish. Ruby is given a welcome supportive role and the author even manages to make Neal useful to the plot - as miraculous as that sounds. A good, fun read.

Title: Destiny is the Rabbit Hole
Pairing: Regina Mills/Emma Swan   Aurora/Mulan   Snow White/Charming
Comments: This starts at the beginning of the season 2 premier with Henry begging Regina to save Emma, but after that though it spins off into a tale better then anything could dish out. The character voices are distinct and the relationships are real. Emma and Regina's relationship is full of the snark and banter that we love mixed with a slow burning build that makes you want scream at them to hurry up, while at the same time you can't help but watch. It's part of an ongoing series and every single story is as engaging as the last.

Author: Dabkey
Title: And Playing the Role of Herself...
Comments: The story is set behind the scenes of a Law & Order style television show, and has led many people to view it more as an L&O or SVU uber than anything Xena related. But it doesn't really matter if you're picturing Olivia or Xena, this is a charming story that allows you to get to know the characters in some depth, and doesn't skimp on the development of the lesser seen characters. A great romance.

Title: 99.607% Match Compatibility
Pairing: Root/Shaw
Comments: The Machine plays matchmaker and someone unexpected comes back from the dead. A light-hearted story that provides a welcome relief from all the angst and heartache of season four. I love that it expands on the idea of The Machine as matchmaker as that's something that holds up well in canon especially after 'If-Then-Else'. It also has angry/jealous Shaw and the confusion the latter of those emotions causes her.

Author: amiphobic
Title: Instincts
Pairing: Root/Shaw
Comments: The story is predominately a team fic where Team Machine's efforts to save two separate numbers overlap. What elevates the story from many of the fine team fics out there is the fact that Root and Shaw have been left holding the baby; literally. Neither woman is exactly Mary Poppins but it's Root who is initially the furthest outside her comfort zone. We've seen Root angry, crazy, playful and flirtatious, but the exasperation and trepidation she dispalys in her early dealings with the baby are wonderful. Shaw certainly enjoyed her discomfort. The story had many of the elements I love: humour, romance, team dynamics and a solid case to bring it all together.

Title: Kismet and Other Movements
Pairing: Root/Shaw
Comments: A soulmates AU - when I read that this was a 'soulmates AU' I immediately assumed it would be some radical AU where no-one was quite who they were on the show and the big reveal was in the spirit of a French farce. Not that I wouldn't have enjoyed that, but what this story provides is something altogether more in-character and emotionally resonant. The soulmates aspect is a very big part of the story but it is still set amid the unfolding story of the Machine and Team Machine and the fight against Decima. It was the kind of story I didn't realise I needed until I started reading.

Title: Among the Dead
Pairing: Maura/Jane
Comments: As worn out as the idea of Jane and Maura being brought together by tragedy is, this fic does it in such a way that you still find yourself being drawn in. Jane is seriously hurt in a horrific accident and is forced back to Boston where she has to confront truths and lies and try to figure out which is which. It starts off very dark as Jane has to deal with trying to get back on her feet, but this makes the warm hearted moments and the victories all the sweeter. Is a Rizzles Fan Awards winner so you know it has to be good.

Title: August and Everything After
Pairing: Gail/Holly
Comments: Post-season four. Prepare to be glued to your monitor or mobile e-reader for hours as you greedily devour this novel of a story. It follows a year in the lives of Gail Peck and Holly Stewart as their relationship blossoms and evolves following the traumatic events at the end of season four. There are some bumps along the way but it's a real feel-good story that's full of the growing love between these two wonderful characters -- Holly's first meeting with Gail's mother was a particular favourite of mine.

Star Trek: Enterprise

Author: Jintian
Title: The Sum of Both
Pairing: T'Pol/Hoshi
Comments: A follow-up to that "let me help you relax" scene in "Sleeping Dogs". T'Pol ponders what appears to be sexual arousal in Hoshi's response to their meditation. A short but well-written story, with the erotic subtext kept nice and subtle as it should be.

Star Trek: Voyager

Author: Kathi
Title: "Stardate 53743.2, 0600 hrs" and "Stardate 53743.2, 2300 hrs"
Paring: Janeway/Seven
Comments: Kathi has listed these two short stories as PWP's but they are, in fact, first class point-of-view fics. The first story "Stardate 53743.2, 0600 hrs" takes the form of a log entry by Seven regarding her covert sexual relationship with Captain Janeway. The sequel "Stardate 53743.2, 2300 hrs" is a log entry that gives Janeway's point of view. Kathi does an excellent job of putting across the 'voice' of these two very different personalities, and in doing so manages to sum up the entire J/7 relationship succinctly and well.

Author: Bailey B
Title: Bound
Pairing: Janeway/Seven
Comments: Seven of Nine loses her memory during an away mission. More than a week later Janeway finds her working in a strip club on an alien planet, but her attempt to rescue the Borg doesn't turn out the way she expects! Afterwards on Voyager, both Seven and Janeway have trouble coming to terms with what happened between them. A J/7 story that contains hot sex, romance, and well-written character interaction - what more could you want?
—Odon

Author: Bailey B
Title: Rules of the Game
Pairing: Janeway/Seven
Comments: Bailey B's aim in writing this Post-Endgame tale was to get Janeway and Seven together in a way that was both realistic and believable in the context of the Voyager series. In this she has succeeded admirably, creating a highly readable story that addresses numerous plotholes and hanging threads left by the scriptwriters. Of special note is the board of inquiry into Janeway's actions in "Equinox", and her counseling sessions with Deanna Troi. These scenes clearly had a lot of thought and planning put into them, with Troi's speech patterns and modus operandi portrayed especially well. Likewise Admiral Necheyev, whose backstage politicking conceals her own secret agenda. The oft-criticised 'multiple personality Janeway' comes across as a real person, and Bailey B does an excellent job of showing her stubborness, self-centeredness, guilt, commitment and passion for both her crew and notably, Seven of Nine. Overall if there's one thing that sums up "Rules of the Game", it's realism. You get the feeling that everything here really could happen. I award it...five hot, steaming mugs of coffee!

Authors: Kelly and Boadicea
Title: Baby Demon
Pairing: Janeway/Seven
Comments: This short story is one of the best angst fics I've read, so be warned. Its premise is that, after the events of the episode "Relativity", Janeway and Seven are accidentally stranded back in time on present day Earth. Seven has lost all memory of who she was previously and events are told from her point of view. A very disturbing, very moving tale.

Author: Jane St. Clair
Title: A Kiss on the Body Electric
Pairing: Janeway/Seven
Comments: In an online interview Jane St Clair said that if you like a writer's work you should follow them into whatever fandom they choose to write. I certainly recommend so with this author. Although she has written only a few short stories in the Voyager genre, sheer quality of writing puts Jane St Clair on a class above the vast majority of us lowly fanfiction authors. The two stories I recommend to J/7ers are "A Kiss on the Body Electric" and "Cracked". They both involve a situation (the rescue of Seven from a cave collapse in "Cracked"; a reckless drive on the holodeck in "Kiss") and its aftermath, exploring in poetic depth the thoughts and frustrations of Janeway and Seven regarding themselves and their relationship.

Title: Lone Wolf

Comments: I love everything that Princess Alexandria writes. This story was the first real femslash story I ever read for Twilight and it is still one of my all time favorites. I come back to read this story all the time. The story mostly takes place in Diana's point of view but there are chapters where that POV switches. Many people might not like stories with Original characters but this story is worth trying. Diana comes to fit so completely into the lives of the Cullens that you'll wonder why she wasn't in the movies or the books, whichever you prefer. Title: Creeping Things
Pairing: Scully/Reyes
Comments: This was the story that caused me to fall love with the idea of Monica Reyes and Dana Scully finding eachother and acting upon their mutual desires. There is a believable plot line, interesting story, and moments of great tenderness and emotional resonance. The combination kept me reading until the end, and then made me read it again immediately once I was done.

Xena: Warrior Princess

Author: KG MacGregor
Title: The Road to Kilimanjaro
Pairing: Xena/Gabrielle (uber)
Comments: I've read a number of Xena uber stories by this author and would recommend all of them, but to just pick one for the moment I would suggest reading The Road to Kilimanjaro. The journey centres around a group of people who are attempting to climb to the top of the mountain, and the relationship that develops between two of the intrepid travellers. Before you start thinking icepicks and death defying rope swings, I should point out that they walk to the top. It's still gruelling and beautifully described but the actions depicted aren't those of superhumans, but people like you and me, well, maybe fitter than me but only because they trained for it. The story is relatively long, but with that length you get a real sense of who these characters are and even a glimpse into the personalities of those people making the journey with them. I would highly recommend it.

Author: Crème Brûlée
Title: Cooking On High
Pairing: Xena/Gabrielle (uber)
Comments: It is somewhat hard to describe this story with any justice. I could simply tell you that it involves a reknowned chef, fiesty summer waitperson, intrigue and food, but that would only be half of it. What makes Cooking on High a must read is that it's just so darn quirky and fun. A strong sense of humour resonates throughout the story, a feat any writer knows is hard enough in a short story but Crème Brûlée somehow manages to pull it off on a much larger scale - an amazing accomplishment. You'll enjoy this one.
