Chapter Five - Falls Apart
Cindy rolled onto her back on the cement. Her head was killing her. Why had she followed Lindsay? She smiled to herself when she imagined Lindsay's response. 'You are too much of a reporter, Thomas. One of these days it will get you into trouble.' Oh, how right you were Lindsay. She raised her hand to her forehead and pulled it back in pain. There was blood. Alot of it. The door to the basement opened, and she looked up as Jace made his way down the stairs. He had a tray in his hands and he set it down in front of her. "I am not going to let you starve. I just won't let you go. Not again." He snarled. He left the basement and Cindy looked at the food. She rolled to her other side and ignored the food. She let the tears roll down her face as she thought about Jill and what she wouldn't give to be in her arms right now. As much as it scared her to admit it, she felt safe with Jill.
"Six days. Lindsay, what are the odds that if we haven't found her by now that we are looking for her body?" Jill asked, trying to not cry as she asked the question. Claire wrapped her arms around her.
"We are going to find her and she is going to be fine." Lindsay said.
Tom stuck his head into the office. "Lindz, can I talk to you for a minute?"
She squeezed Jill's shoulder as she walked past. "What?"
"Uni's over in missing persons got a hot tip on your friend."
"Please, please, say alive."
He was quiet for a moment. "We don't know."
Lindsay ran back into the office and grabbed her jacket. "I will be back." She said, following Tom out to the car.
Lindsay cautiously entered the building. She went down one hallway with a Uni while two others went the opposite way. As they neared a door, Lindsay could tell it led to a basement, gunfire erupted from upstairs. She motioned the Uni to go assist as she carefully opened the door. She made her way carefully down the steps and her heart almost stopped when she saw a body on the floor, unmoving. "Cindy?" She whispered, knowing it was the reporter from her red hair. She made her way across the room and checked the vitals. Barely a pulse. She rolled her over and got a good look at how beat up the young woman was. "Cindy, come on. Wake up and look at me." She said, setting down her gun and flashlight to pick Cindy up. She had to get her out of that room. As she lifted the girl up, she could tell she hadn't eaten in days. She made her way out of the building and into the bright sunlight to a waiting ambulance. As she passed Cindy off to the paramedics, she looked at Tom. "Tell me you got the bastard."
"No." He said, looking at Cindy. "He slipped away."
"Fuck!"
"Lindz.." She turned to Cindy, who had her eyes open and had her hand lifted up. Lindsay moved to her and grabbed her hand.
"I am right here."
"Good."
"Shh." Lindsay whispered, climbing into the ambulance. She looked at Tom. "Go get Jill."
Lindsay stood her ground in the waiting room as Jill came running to her. "She's alive, right?"
"Barely." Lindsay replied, holding Jill tightly as Claire entered the waiting room.
"I want to see her."
"Jill, you don't want to see her right now. Not how she looks." She whispered, not able to hold back her tears.
"Don't tell me what I want and don't want to do." Jill said, taking a step back.
"Room 213." Lindsay said, watching Jill run down the hallway. The blonde woman stopped outside the door and took a few deep breaths. She gently pushed open the door and put her hand over her mouth when she saw the redhead lying on the bed.
"Cin.." She whispered. The redhead slowly opened her eyes and smiled. Jill closed the distance between them and held Cindy to her gently. "I was so scared."
"But I am safe now. Ish."
Jill was quiet for a moment. "Four miscarriages?" She whispered.
"You know?" Cindy asked, her voice still a whisper. "I never wanted you to know."
