At Last
By Barbara Gordon

Garth Brooks "The Red Strokes"

Olivia in a rare carefree moment, while on one of her outings to the coffee shop with Alex, impulsively asked her out on a date. Before the fear could settle in her stomach, and much to her great surprise Alex had said yes. Olivia wanted to give Alex the perfect date, to give the best that she could possibly give. But she also wanted to make sure Alex knew what she could be getting into. Instead of taking Alex to a fancy shmancy 5 star restaurant full of pretenses and illusion, Olivia took Alex to a small well hidden Italian restaurant. Its perfect romantic setting had usually had Olivia ordering take out or delivery, since she had no one special to share it with before, and hadn't wanted to stick out like a sore thumb dining alone.

Alex for her part loved the restaurant it was perfect and like Olivia, carefully hidden unless you knew where to look. Everything was beautiful and authentic in ways that Alex's usual dinner haunts never could be.

Moonlight on canvas, midnight and wine
Two shadows starting to softly combine
The picture they're painting
Is one of the heart
And to those who have seen it
It's a true work of art

The date ended all too soon for either woman's taste. Wanting to spend more time in Alex's company, Olivia suggested walking to Alex's apartment which was close by. Feeling the need to spend more time with Olivia as well Alex agreed, the cloudy evening sky made them feel enclosed, secreted away from everything. A building away from Alex's building, Olivia and Alex heard music coming from one of the open windows above them.

Oh, the red strokes
Passions uncaged
Thundering moments of tenderness rage
Oh, the red strokes
Tempered and strong (Fearlessly drawn)
Burning the night like the dawn

In a completely uncharacteristic moment of romanticism Olivia swept Alex into her arms and danced with her under the lights. Olivia's heart caught in her throat as she looked at Alex as if seeing her for the first time. The joyful smile that lit up her face and the soft twinkle in her eyes, Olivia found herself falling in love with Alex all over again. And then she kissed her.

Steam on the window, salt in a kiss
Two hearts have never pounded like this
Inspired by a vision
That they can't command
Erasing the borders
With each brush of a hand

Oh, the red strokes
Passions uncaged
Thundering moments of tenderness rage
Oh, the red strokes
Tempered and strong (Fearlessly drawn)
Burning the night like the dawn

The rain caught them unawares, laughing they pulled apart reluctantly even then. But the music could still be heard and Olivia pulled Alex in for another spin unwilling to let the moment completely go. Laughing they ran to Alex's building and made it to some cover though they were drenched. Laughing some more Alex pulled Olivia into the rain again and they danced again, this time to the music within. Under the cover again Olivia gave Alex another kiss and though a great part of her wanted to join Alex into her apartment to see the night unfold, having been invited by Alex, Olivia declined. Too much too soon would ruin everything, and they had already created beautiful memories, too precious already in Olivia's heart.

Oh, the blues will be blue and the jealousies green
But when love picks its shade it demands to be seen

Oh, the red strokes
Passions uncaged
Thundering moments of tenderness rage
Oh, the red strokes
Tempered and strong (Fearlessly drawn)
Burning the night like the dawn

Olivia kissed Alex's forehead, her cheek, her nose, and finally her lips wishing her a good night, walking out into the rain and the night.

Oh, the red strokes
Passions uncaged
Thundering moments of tenderness rage
Oh, the red strokes
Tempered and strong (Fearlessly drawn)
Burning the night like the dawn

Steam on the window, salt in a kiss
Two hearts have never pounded like this

Etta James "At Last"

Alex, hours later in the safe confines of her apartment, wearing a soft terry cloth robe, got off the phone with Olivia. She had wanted to make sure she had gotten home safely.

Sipping hot cocoa Alex smiled softly as memories of their date filled her mind again. She turned on her stereo and put in one of her favorite jazz/blues compilation CD's. Filled with a wealth of warm and indescribable feeling she selected her song and put it on repeat.

At last my love has come along
My lonely days are over
And life is like a song
Ohh yeah yeah
At last
the skies above are blue
My heart was wrapped up in clover
The night I looked at you

Olivia had definitely been full of surprises that evening, dinner was romantic and enlightening. Instead of filler conversation usually done on first dates that talked about more important things, having told each other so much already.

I found a dream, that I could speak to
A dream that I can call my own
I found a thrill to press my cheek to
A thrill that I have never known

Their impromptu dance on the way to Alex's apartment still left her feeling so many things even now. God their first kiss! It completely stole her breath away, it still made her stomach flutter. Not wanting it to end, Alex had surprised even herself when she pulled them back out into the rain to dance some more. She had felt so safe and so loved, held within Olivia's arms. Alex had so wanted Olivia to join her into her apartment, even more so into her bed. Olivia's tenderness, even as she declined the invitation made Alex's heart seem as if it would burst.

Ohh yeah yeah…
You smile, you smile
oh And then the spell was cast
And here we are in heaven
for you are mine....
At Last

Thinking now, Alex could see why her invitation had been declined. The evening had been everything she'd ever dreamed about and more, so much more. Its' romance had taken her back to the days when she had dreamed about Prince Charming, only now it was Olivia Benson, and she was here and she was real.

At last my love has come along
My lonely days are over
And life is like a song
Ohh yeah yeah
At last
the skies above are blue
My heart was wrapped up in clover
The night I looked at you
