Happy Birthday to Me
By Annette

Part 1

The quiet of the ADA's office was disturbed by a loud knock on her door. "Who is it?"

"Special delivery for an Alexandra Cabot."

I'm not expecting anything? "Come in."

Alex signed for the package and showed the delivery man out. Her curiosity was stirred as she opened the package.

She gasped, finding an assortment of brightly wrapped packages along with a card. Oh my God, I completely forgot, it's my birthday! Wait, no one else knows when it is, so… Who…

Jeez, Cabot, open the card for crying out loud! She mentally berated herself.

Hmm, lets see…

A Good Lawyer Knows the Law… opening the card led to a snicker at what she found.

A Great Lawyer Knows the Judge.

How true! Damn, no signature! Maybe I can figure out who it is by what's in the other boxes.

Opening the small, square box, Alex found a coffee mug.

Hah, sarcasm, hmm… Munch? Nah…

Alright, let me try this one. She exclaimed to herself as she rubbed her hands together. The flat, rectangular package was opened to reveal…

:Gasp: Hey, that's a little personal!

Alex held the bright yellow boxer briefs in her hand, her finger tracing over the embroidery.

Legal Briefs, indeed! Well, it had better not be Munch now, that's for sure! Damn, who is it? Well, one more present to open. Maybe this one will give me the clue I need…

Alex opened the large rectangular box and stared in disbelief at what it contained.

Aww, that's so cute! She reached in and gently lifted the item from the box.

Oh, it's so soft… and look it's wearing glasses like mine… and a tiny briefcase with my name on it. I don't believe it… those are a miniature version of my Legal Briefs! Who could have sent all this? Oh, God, I'm gonna cry!

Just then another knock interrupted Alex's musings.

Crap, pull it together Cabot! "Who's there?"

Part 2

"Alex? It's me, Olivia. Can I come in?"

Olivia… Olivia!!! Could it be…. "Uh, yeah, come on in."

"Well, um, I would but the, uh, door seems to be locked?"

"Oh…" Shit, idiot! "Hang on a sec." Alex breathed deeply, trying her best to get a hold of her emotions before opening the door.

"Hey, Liv? What brings you here?" She's trying to peek over my shoulder… It must be her! Yea! Wait a minute, why am I so excited that it's Olivia? Oh, please Cabot, denial ain't a river in Egypt!

As Alex continued her internal debate, Olivia looked closely at her. She looks like she's been crying. And now she seems a bit spacey. God I hope I did the right thing getting her all that silly stuff.

"Alex. Hey, sweetie, are you ok?"

Alex looked into Olivia's eyes, She called me sweetie! and promptly moved into a loose embrace with the Detective. She then spun away, heading toward her desk, nearly skipping with excitement.

"Oh, Olivia, I don't think I've ever felt quite like this. Some amazing person sent me the most adorable gifts! You wouldn't happen to know anything about that would you? You see, they never signed the card."

Olivia couldn't believe the almost child-like glee in those words. Her wish to bring a smile to the beautiful ADA's face on her birthday seemed to be paying off in spades! Alright, let's see what's what here.

"I don't know, that depends. Did you like 'em?"

"Yes! Well I started with the mug… very funny by the way. Then I opened the 'Legal Briefs'… of course they really got me wondering. But, oh Olivia… the bear! She's so cute. How did you ever get those glasses for her? They really look like mine!"

"Well, they said they could do it if I sent them a picture of the glasses. They did a great job… Hey, no fair, I never admitted to getting her for you! You fink!"

"Busted! But don't worry, I happen to know a really good lawyer."

"Oh you do, do you? Well perhaps this lawyer would like to discuss my case over dinner?"

"Dinner?"

"Yeah, you know, last meal of the day – follows lunch if you're lucky enough to get it."

"Alright smarty pants, I don't think I could concentrate right now anyway." Alex stepped up to Olivia and looked into her eyes. "You have no idea how much this means to me. I really never made a big deal of my birthday – I guess it's a learned behavior. But you've shown me what a birthday should feel like. Thank you." Once again she wrapped her arms around Olivia. Only this time Olivia pulled her closer and whispered in her ear.

"Your birthday's not over yet, Counselor"

Part 3

Alex shivered at the hot breath in her ear and the close proximity of the Detective's body. Mmm… my birthday's not over yet… Maybe I should make a wish.

"Well Counselor, what's the verdict?" Olivia asked as she strode toward the door.

"Verdict? Oh, dinner… let me grab my purse and we can get out of here. Where are we going exactly?"

"Well, there's this great little Hungarian restaurant… the owner was a friend of my Mom's. The place is small but the food is good. Plus, it's just a couple of blocks from my place."

"Don't you think that's a little presumptuous Detective?"

Olivia stopped dead in her tracks and looked over toward Alex, her expression quickly going from confusion to embarrassment. "Oh… uh, well… um I didn't… I wasn't…"

Gotcha! Alex laughed and grabbed Olivia's hands to keep her from turning away. "Hey, I was just teasing. I do have a sense of humor you know."

Quickly gaining her composure Olivia resumed walking. "I'd heard a rumor to that effect but I didn't realize it was true. I'll just have to keep that in mind." They walked in silence for a bit each lost in their thoughts. "Anyway, I called Elliot and asked him to run interference for me. It never fails, whenever I'm in the middle of something the damn cell rings."

"We certainly wouldn't want to get interrupted in the middle of things now would we." Careful Cabot, she doesn't know you're a chronic flirter. She might get the wrong idea… or is it the right idea…"

"Oh no, you're not gonna get me to stutter or walk into a wall this time. I'm on to your 'false innuendo' now Counselor."

"Hmph, I guess Birthday Wishes don't always come true."

"Oof!" Olivia rubbed at the shoulder that had just impacted the doorjamb.

"What was that about walls… Maybe we should save the chit chat for the restaurant Detective."

True to their word the two arrived at the restaurant without any further conversation. Of course, it could also be due to the fact that they were both busy trying to figure out what they really wanted to happen tonight. As Olivia held the door open for Alex a booming voice was heard as a well-built, good looking older gentleman hurried over to them.

"Olivia! It is so good to see you again. It has been too long." Much to Alex's astonishment the man reached out and pulled Olivia into a bear hug. "I have missed you and I wonder how you are."

"Mickey, I missed you too. I'm sorry I haven't stopped by but tonight is a special night and there wasn't anywhere else I would go."

"Special? What is the occasion? And who is this lovely lady?"

"This lovely lady is Alex and the special occasion is her birthday."

At this Alex turned a bit pink with embarrassment, but her expression was one of wonder. Special occasion… she thinks this is special…

Her musings are interrupted as Mickey led them both to a lovely little table in the back. "I will prepare a meal fit for a queen. I will be right out with the wine and appetizer."

As he turned to go Alex raised her hand to stop him. Olivia grabbed her hand and Alex looked at her in confusion. "But, Olivia, we didn't even tell him what we wanted."

Now Olivia's complexion darkened a bit "Well, I kinda told him the things you like and asked him to make them. I am a Detective after all, so I paid attention when we went out to dinner or you talked about things you liked." Embarrassed, Olivia kept her eyes on the table. Just then a hand came into view, finger under her chin, lifting her face. Her eyes looked up into watery blue. "Oh, Alex, please don't be upset…"

"I'm not, I'm just overwhelmed. No one has ever gone to so much trouble for me, ever. I've heard the phrase 'tears of joy' before but now I truly know what it means. Thank you, Olivia." At this admission the two simply stare into each other eyes. A world of emotions being laid bare.

The spell is broken by the arrival of the wine and food. The two dig in as they make idle conversation.

"Alex, you said no one ever went to so much trouble for your birthday, I would have thought you'd have some great stories to tell."

"Yeah, well, when my parents weren't away on business or social affairs they would actually whish me a happy birthday. This was usually accompanied by a very practical gift – new school uniforms, classic literature, additions to my trust fund – never anything personal. I never had anyone sing or give me a cake with candles… I should be thankful for what I had, but it was so impersonal."

"How about you Liv, what were your birthdays like?" She noticed a stiffening in the brunette's expression, "You don't have to…"

"No, it's ok. They were a mixed bag really. Lets just say my birthday reminded my Mom of my conception, so there were times when she'd spend the day in the bottle. Some were nice though, my Mom and I would bake a cake and she'd sing. I'd blow out the candles and open my present."

A change of topic is in order. "Well I'm stuffed, that was a wonderful meal. Thank you Olivia."

"How about coffee and dessert at my place?"

"Are you being presumptuous again Detective?"

"Not presumptuous, optimistic."

Alex's smile widened and she chuckled. "I almost expected Mickey to come out with a cake and lit candle bellowing the Birthday Song."

"He really wanted to but I asked him not to."

"Why?"

"I wasn't sure you'd like it so I didn't want to take any chances on spoiling the mood."

"Well, maybe next year we can let him sing."

"Are you being presumptuous now Counselor?"

"Not presumptuous Detective, optimistic."

They smiled brightly at each other and Olivia offered her arm to Alex. "Shall we?" Olivia asked.

"Let's." Alex said, accepting the offer. They strolled arm in arm the few blocks to Olivias apartment. Not a word was spoken as they each anticipated the evening to come.

Part 4

Upon entering the apartment Olivia motioned Alex toward the living room. "Make yourself comfortable while I get the coffee going."

Alex made her way over to the sofa and sat down closing her eyes and reliving the last few hours. Her expression wistful as she recalled all the cute gifts she received, the wonderful dinner, but most of all the attentions of one dark, beautiful Detective. She's been so sweet to me, and she's flirting back with me. How far will this go? How far do I want this to go? She's made me feel so much already, more than anyone ever has. Do I want more? She closed her eyes again, an image of the smiling Detective filling her thoughts. I'll take whatever she is willing to give me.

That decision made Alex turned her attention to the kitchen doorway. A soft glow caught her eyes seconds before a vision aglow with candlelight began walking toward her. So enraptured by the sight she almost missed the soft singing.

"Happy Birthday dear Alex, Happy Birthday to you."

Olivia held the small candle-lit cake out to Alex. "Go ahead, blow out the candles. Oh, and don't forget to make a wish."

Closing her eyes tightly she wished the same wish she had earlier in the day. Opening her eyes once again she gently blew the candles out.

"Now, to make sure your wish comes true, you need to wear your birthday hat." At that Alex was presented with said hat. Not taking the hat immediately Olivia decided to place it on her head for her.

"I am not wearing this Olivia!"

"Aw, come on, it looks adorable on you! Come look in the mirror… Please… Pretty please? For me?"

"Alright, for you." Anything for you.

Olivia took her by the hand and led her over to the wall mirror. "Hah, Olivia, I look silly."

"No you don't, you look absolutely adorable." And beautiful, and gorgeous…

"If you say so."

"I say so. Now come on cutie-pie, lets have some cake!"

Making their way back into the living room Alex proceeded to cut the cake as Olivia continued on into the kitchen to get the coffee. Upon her return Olivia was captivated by the sight of the beautiful ADA licking some icing from her finger tips. Captivated and thoroughly aroused by the sight of those fingers sliding across those lips… Pull it together woman before you end up spilling this coffee!

"Mmmm, Olivia," Alex moaned, her eyes shut tightly. "This icing is wonderful!"

Crash! Alex's startled eyes popped open. "Are you alright?"

"Yeah, thankfully I almost had the tray down before it slipped. Just a little spillage." Yeah, and a flood somewhere else!

"Well, grab a seat and tell me where you got this divine cake!"

"Actually, I made it. It's just a box cake with a cream cheese icing. I remember you saying you didn't like really sweet icing, so…"

"Oh, Olivia, you're so sweet!" Alex moved over to sit next to her, taking her cake plate and putting it on the table. She wrapped her arms around the pleasantly surprised brunette and whispered in her ear. "Thank you." Placing a light kiss on her cheek Alex moved back a bit and took Olivia's hands in hers. "I feel so special, all the things you've done, it feels like… like you're courting me." With that Olivia looked up at Alex with a slight smile on her lips. "Are you? Courting me?" Please say yes!

"Would that be alright?" Olivia replied shyly, here eyes once again dropping to their joined hands. Please say yes!

"Yes!" "Yes!" They both answered in unison. Their eyes locked and, with that admission, the mood shifted from playful to intimate. Their bodies moved together needing the closeness as if sustenance. Olivia drew Alex to her, cupping her cheek, fingers sliding into her hair, pulling her closer and closer.

Alex reveled in the sensation of Olivia's caresses, willingly following the cues being given. Her eyes locked onto Olivia's as her lips finally felt an answering softness. Lips sliding, tongues melding, hands roaming – mapping previously uncharted territory.

Olivia pulled away, under much protest from a very aroused blonde. "Please, Olivia, don't stop."

"Oh, I'm not stopping sweetheart." She held out her hand pulling Alex to her feet. Their mouths fusing again as Olivia began leading her down the hall. By the time they reached the bedroom both have been divested of their shirts and bras. By the time they reached the bed they are each completely naked.

"Do you like this, Alex?" Olivia asked as her finger circled Alex's breast.

"You're a Detective, look for the evidence." Alex gasped as those same fingers closed around her nipple.

And she proceeded to do just that. Questioning every inch of Alex's body… receiving answers… probing deeper until she got the confession she desired. The sight of Alex's body arching under her hands… the scent of their shared passion… the taste lingering on her tongue… She also bore witness to her own supplication, her throat raw from giving testimony… her body aching pleasantly from a thorough cross-examination.

Alex stretched languorously, basking in the joy of discovery. "I was starting to wonder if there was anyone out there who could make me feel like this."

"I know what you mean," Olivia smiled and raised her eyebrow. "But I'm not just anyone anymore."

"No, you're not."

With a smile and a kiss they fell asleep wrapped tightly around each other.

Alex awoke the next morning finally understanding what it meant to be truly sated. Niggling doubts tried to rear their ugly heads but she swatted them away. As she looked at the sleeping form of the beautiful Detective she could hardly believe that just a few short hours ago this woman was merely a birthday wish. As her eyes traveled over the landscape she'd mapped so thoroughly the night before, she gave in to her temptation and started to stroke her lover to wakefulness. Hand sliding over satin-soft curves – dipping into hollows – leading the way for teeth, lips, tongue to cherish the gift beneath her.

Oh yeah, Happy Birthday to me!

The End
