Heart & Hearth
By Angie

On the way here I picked up a pack of smokes. I quit last week. But I told her there was no way that I could make it through this trip without nicotine. And what do you know? Here less than ten minutes and where am I? Outside sucking the life out of a cigarette. Her sister gets to me. I shouldn't let her get to me but she does and that makes it even worse. The door opens and Alice comes out, drink in hand. Guess nobody's going to survive this thing without drugs of one sort or another.

It feels kinda nice to be smoking dope in my girlfriend's parents' basement. Makes me feel young again, as opposed to the happily almost married, thirtysomething I am in reality. I don't know if it's the weed or not, but I don't think I've ever been as in love with Lucy as I am right now. She is so adorable it makes my heart hurt to think that she's mine. She makes me laugh 'til I cry and when she draws me to her for a kiss I couldn't care less that her pervy brother is in the room watching.

We stand together, her hand in mine, as her nephews fire flaming arrows at her father's coffin, leaving thin tendrils of smoke in their wake. Despite the absurdity of it all, it makes me realise that this is what it's all about. It's about family and making allowances and love. This family, weirdness aside, are here for each other when they need it most. And I'm sort of happy to be a part of it. Lucy starts to cry and I pull her against me, kissing her head. They start to sing. Then the coffin explodes. This is my family.
