Believe
By Celievamp

Janet Fraiser firmly believed that the bad times were behind her and only good times lay ahead. She was done with fulfilling other people's expectations, her divorce was through and she had severed all ties – emotional and financial – with her former husband. She was starting a new job with a classified project that sounded fascinating, moving half way across the continent to do so. Her new house was small and slightly shabby but had lots of potential and for the first time she would have her own way over how it was decorated and furnished. She could please herself… well, there wasn't really anyone else.

She didn't have time to feel lonely, she told herself. She still had a mass of orientation material to go through and she was going to get a whole new set of files today. Her office at the Academy Hospital in Colorado Springs was light and spacious, her staff friendly and welcoming. And today for the first time she was going to Cheyenne Mountain, to the classified part of her job – the Stargate Project.

New job. New home. New places. New people. Hopefully soon, new friends.

New friends. She could settle for that. She wasn't looking for an emotional life right now, honestly. That would come in its own time. There was someone out there for her, she knew that. This time she would not rush into anything but let things happen in their own time. She would not go looking. If it was meant to be, it was meant to be.

All the signs were for NORAD. There was no mention of the SGC. She glanced at her instructions, making sure she hadn't taken a wrong turning somewhere.

The first checkpoint loomed ahead. This was it. A new beginning…

The CD player in her car moved on to a new track. Smashing Pumpkins. One of the few things she and her ex had agreed on was music. Dividing up their joint CD collection was one of the hardest things they had had to do. She was glad she had won out on this one.

"I want to believe in you and I heard you
Your song, you sing, a truth is no other
I want to believe in you, dear "

Her newly issued pass and security clearance got her through the first checkpoint and she drove through the outer compound towards the entrance to the Mountain itself. She had mentally checked when she realised just how far underground she would be working. The psychological effects of that on its own would have to be watched for as well as… everything else. Even with the brief details she had received so far it sounded more like the plot of a science fiction movie than the kind of job little Janet Elyssa Fraiser from no place in particular should be doing.

She stopped at the second checkpoint and handed over her documentation again, aware of the armed SFs standing guard. Another car had drawn up behind her. She could make out a shock of light coloured hair through the slightly tinted windscreen and thought it might be another woman. There was a long silence as the SF glanced over her information. "I'm sorry ma'am but I'm going to have to ask you to step out of the car."

"Is there a problem?" she asked.

"No ma'am. It's just protocol for all first time visitors. I'll need to phone down to get you an escort."

Janet heard a car door slam somewhere behind her and realised that the occupant of the second car had got out and was walking towards them. To her surprise she heard her name being called.

"Captain Fraiser?"

"Yes?" Janet turned to see a tall slender woman approaching. Though she was not in uniform Janet could tell by her bearing that she was military. She was also astonishingly beautiful. She shivered as deep blue eyes regarded her with interest. Seems she would not have to go looking that far after all.

"It's good to meet you, Captain. I'm Captain Carter – Sam Carter. Welcome to the Mountain." Sam Carter smiled at her. After a moment's breathless hesitation Janet Fraiser smiled back.

The End

SMASHING PUMPKINS LYRICS – Rotten Apples

Believe

Close your eyes
Until the sunlight dies
In your head a thousand stars
Through the darkness you can see a light
And if they steal your life
Your heart is still mine
I want to believe in you and I heard you
Your song, you sing, a truth, there's no other
I want to believe in you, dear
On Sunday
There's a life I hide
Well I tried to disguise
And I can take you a million miles away
I want to believe in you and I heard you
Your song, you sing, a truth is no other
I want to believe in you, dear

On Sunday I made amends
Of all my mistakes
May God speed be with you

Oh oh oh o oh
and I
I want to believe in you and I heard you
Your song, you sing, a truth, there's no other
I want to believe in you and I heard you
Your song, you sing, a truth, there's no other
I want to believe in you and I heard you
Your song, you sing, a truth, a lover
I want to believe in you and I heard you
Your song, you sing, a truth, there's no other
I want to believe in you, dear
On Sunday
On Sunday I made amends
For all my mistakes
May God speed be with you
