Pepa's super happy; Silvia flips the bird
Recap by Misty Flores

Previously on LHDP: Silvia and Pepa have been engaged in a secret affair for about two months, but work has started to seep into their happy bubble. Silvia's ex-husband and close family friend Lucas is on the run after being accused of murder and being a crime informant, and neither woman knows their niece, who is Lucas' lover and a constable with the police has been helping him evade the police. Nor are they aware that Inspector Salgado, the internal affairs agent brought in to find Lucas and root out the snitch, has begun to suspect Sara of assisting Lucas, and is now actively looking for evidence to investigate her.

To top it all off, Povedilla, a kind-hearted officer who has just earned his badge, has been kidnapped in a stake out gone horribly wrong.

EPISODE 4x21: Pepa's super happy; Silvia flips the bird

SCENE: The X-Rated Theater, where Povedilla disappeared

While Montoya interviews a witness, Rita, Quique and Curtis search for evidence. Pepa tapes off the crime scene, and Silvia bags a piece of prosthetic plastic that fell off Povedilla's face in the struggle.

As Quique looks a little green around the gills, Curtis and Rita react with horror when they discover Povedilla's ear piece underneath the seat.

Pepa sneaks over to Silvia.

PEPA: Check it out, redhead. I just got a text. It's the house of my friend in Conil.

She shows Silvia a picture on her phone.

SILVIA: How beautiful!

PEPA: We'll check it out this weekend.

SILVIA: This weekend?

PEPA: [playfully] Aw, what's the matter? Do you already have plans?

Without thinking, she begins to caress Silvia's cheek.

SILVIA: [whispers] Don't touch me.

She motions with her eyes to the other officers and smiles, softening the request. Pepa's smile falters, but she lowers her hand.

SILVIA: It's just that I have plans to have dinner with my dad on Friday. But I can tell him that [lowers her voice to a whisper] I have to go with Rita to the pediatrician. And if everything goes well, then we'll go to Conil!

Pepa offers a weak smile, but is clearly upset. Silvia immediately notices.

SILVIA: What?

END CLIP

Just then, Quique loses his balance, and faints on the floor. Rita tries to catch him.

RITA: Quique!

CURTIS: Silvia! Inspector!

Silvia and Pepa immediately rush to help.

THE NEXT DAY: SCENE: BRIEFING ROOM

As the group gathers for their morning briefing, Curtis and Pepa tell Paco that Quique picked up the drug that was used to infect Povedilla. He'll be out for at least a few weeks. They are surprised to discover Commander Salgado entering the room, ready to take over the briefing. Coming in behind her, Silvia looks annoyed but resigned.

Salgado gives the meeting, informing them that Lucas had managed to infiltrate the police station and talk to Arrietta, and now Arrietta has clammed up. They've interrogated him all night, and he has said nothing. As she speaks, she watches Sara carefully, and notices that Sara seems almost thrilled by the news. When Sara dumps her paper cup into the trash, she makes note of it, and dismisses the meeting.

Silvia, who has been standing with Salgado, happily heads for Pepa, ready to leave with her.

SALGADO: Inspector! Please stay.

Pepa and Silvia look at each other. Pepa offers a shrug and a look of commiseration, before she heads out without Silvia. Silvia shuts the door and offers a pained smile.

LATER

Silvia gives Salgado her report.

SILVIA: We searched Lucas' house. We did all the tests, and it's clean. The hair you've given me to analyze isn't Arrieta's or Alison's (crime lady) or anyone we have in our system.

She hands Salgado the folder.

SALGADO: What was Lucas like before all of this? From what I understand, you were married to him.

Silvia is stunned.

SILVIA: Yes, I was. What's going on? Am I under suspicion for it? [Salgado smiles] I'm just saying, because if that's the case, then I think I should bring up that everyone's presumed innocent until proven guilty.

SALGADO: Of course. But there's a difference between presuming and suspecting. And someone in this precinct helped Fernandez break in here.

SILVIA: Well, if you're going to interrogate every one of Lucas's girlfriends that were cops, you've got a long list. There's me, and you'd have to interview Montalban, and Escobar…

She trails off when she realizes that Salgado has plucked out a cup from the trashcan, holding it up with toilet paper.

SALGADO: I want you to compare the DNA on this glass, with the hair we found in the hanger.

Silvia is startled as she realizes Salgado already has a suspect.

SILVIA: Whose is it?

SALGADO: If you do your job, you'll find out soon enough.

Silvia is filled with growing dread, because if the suspect was in that room, then it could be anyone of her close friends and family, including Mariano, Paco and Sara.

She's dismissed.

LATER, SCENE: MARIANO'S OFFICE

Meanwhile, Mariano has decided that Don Lorenzo needs a love life, and has chosen Salgado as the prospective lover. He begins to write an email from Commander Salgado to Don Lorenzo when Sara, distraught over Salgado's suspicions, bursts into his office.

SILVIA: Mariano, listen to me, please. I need to ask you a question.

MARIANO: [trying to obstruct her view to the monitor] Okay.

SILVIA: And please, I need you to be honest. Do you know anything about Lucas?

MARIANO:… no-

As Mariano begins to answer her question, Silvia finds herself accidentally reading the email addressed to her father.

SILVIA: [reading] Commissioner, you instill in me a sense of admiration that I often mistake for attraction…

MARIANO: [finishing] Why?

SILVIA: What? [she blinks, trying to get her head back onto the subject] Um… right. Listen - Salgado thinks someone in this precinct is helping Lucas. And not just anyone; she's talking about someone specific. She gave me a glass to analyze the DNA. Please, Mariano, think!

MARIANO: I don't know whose glass it could be, and I don't know-

As he goes on, Silvia once again starts reading the email.

SILVIA: [reading] -we could grab a drink and get to know each other better…

MARIANO: I have no idea who it could possibly be-

SILVIA: [still reading]- Kisses?!

Mariano finally realizes she's reading the email. Silvia tries hard to fight her incredulousness.

SILVIA: I'm sorry, Mariano. I just read that email without meaning to and… are you asking out my dad on a date?!

Caught, Mariano backpeddles.

MARIANO: … yes. [Silvia's jaw drops] NO! No-no-no-no. It's - no, not a DATE date. I mean more of like… er… a meeting or… hanging out. Something casual.

Silvia is speechless. She is unable to suppress her grin. Mariano wants to die.

SILVIA: …Okay then. If you see anything weird with the guys or with Paco.

MARIANO: No, I haven't seen anything.

Still weirded out by Mariano's suddenly gay feelings for her dad, she just nods.

SILVIA: Great.

Mariano can't take it.

MARIANO: Silvia, just a minute. I have to tell you something.

Silvia shuts the door immediately.

MARIANO: I… I admire your dad. For his leadership. For his character.

SILVIA: right. Sure.

MARIANO: But… I'm not into old guys or anything weird, okay?

SILVIA: Right well, the thing is, Mariano, you know that I'm really close to my dad, right? I just… I don't think he'd quite GET the email.

MARIANO: Right sure, well I was thinking that maybe I should just not send it.

SILVIA: That's for the best. Don't send it.

MARIANO: No, I won't send it.

SILVIA: Don't send it.

She leaves with a huge smile on her face. Mariano sighs in frustration, now fully aware that he's made Silvia think he's got a huge gay crush on her father.

SCENE: CACHI'S CAFÉ

Because Lola is out of town with Lucas's sister, Pepa is helping out at the cafe. She sees one of the employees sitting on stage tuning his guitar.

PEPA: Hey, what do you think you're doing? You're just going to leave me alone with the big ass crowd outside?

The employee lifts his hands up good-naturedly.

EMPLOYEE: Lola said I could practice with the band here when I'm not working. And at 5PM, I've got a half hour free for band practice.

PEPA: I'm gonna confirm that!

He smiles and she grins, heading back toward the bar. Silvia walks in.

SILVIA: Pepa, have you seen Paco? I really need to talk to him.

PEPA: No, I haven't seen him.

Her response is cool and cordial, and Silvia freezes as she turns away from her to greet their deli deliveryman, Julian.

PEPA: What's, up Julian?

As she turns away, Silvia catches her.

SILVIA: What's wrong? Are you mad because I told you not to touch me yesterday?

Pepa sighs, and puts down her beers.

PEPA: No, you had a point there. I'm mad because you always have to make up excuses to be with me. You're with Rita-you're at the pediatricians. If you're going to be with me than just say you're going to be with me.

SILVIA: No, I'll tell the people in my life whatever I want. And you can do the same. But I won't butt in to your life, and you don't butt into mine.

Pepa considers this.

PEPA: Great, perfect. [turns to Julian] Hey, Julian! Did you know I'm super happy right now?

It's a question out of left field, but Julian plays along.

JULIAN: Oh yeah? How come?

PEPA [slinging an arm around Silvia]: Because I'm with Silvia.

The entire café quiets, and everyone turns to stare at Silvia. Silvia realizes with mounting horror that she has just given Pepa permission to out her to everyone they both know (and because they work together, and are sisters-in-law, that's pretty much everyone).

JULIAN:… well that's great! Congratulations! If you want we can celebrate with some beers and some of that awesome ham I deliver.

Paco arrives, and Silvia immediately knows where this is going, as Pepa grabs hold of him gleefully and kisses him on both cheeks.

SILVIA: Paco!

PACO: Yes?

PEPA: Paco, hey big brother, you know that Silvia and I are together, right?

Silvia blanches. Paco immediately looks uncomfortable and awkwardly smiles, and begins to stutter.

PACO: … No. I mean - yes. I mean I heard something - I suspected -but…

PEPA: We're girlfriends.

PACO [swallows hard]: Girlfriends. Ha ha.

PEPA: Yeap. We're girlfriends. Isn't that right, Princess?

She leans forward and gives Silvia a precious peck on the mouth, and then immediately leaves, tossing Silvia a triumphant smile as she heads back to the bar. Silvia can't help but smile against her will at Pepa's audacity. Left alone with Silvia, Paco muddles through.

PACO: er.. Silvia… well… I'm just -- uh… I mean… I didn't- well, it's legal now so - and I never… well I'm with my sister-In-Law! And maybe the Grandpa, I mean your dad -

SILVIA: Paco.

PACO: doesn't understand it, but maybe-

But Silvia's already thinking of other, more pressing matters.

SILVIA: Paco - are you helping Lucas?

Before he can answer, Silvia receives a call. She immediately answers it.

SILVIA: Yes?

SALGADO [ON PHONE]: Inspector Castro.

SILVIA: Yes?

SALGADO: I have a warrant to search your niece's room. In twenty minutes, I want you at Inspector Miranda's house with a forensics kit.

SILVIA: Okay.

SALGADO: I trust your professionalism.

SILVIA: Absolutely. Bye. [she hangs up]

PACO: Listen Silvia-

SILVIA: No-no-no, Paco don't say anything. I just got a call from Salgado who told me we're going to do a search at the house of a FAMILY member. [her eyes fill with tears] Of a family member, Paco.

They immediately know she means Sara. Paco is overcome, and with a squeeze on her shoulder, heads out of the café, heading back to his house.

Left behind, Silvia watches Pepa, who smiles at her smugly from the bar.

When Pepa blows an exaggerated kiss in her direction, Silvia responds with a smirk and a middle finger shoved firmly in her direction.

SCENE: SARA'S BEDROOM

With Silvia's warning, Paco has managed to get to Sara's bedroom and clean most of it out, eradicating any trace of Lucas. Silvia and her forensics team search the room under Salgado's watchful eye, but all they find is a number taped to Sara's drawer, which could mean anything.

Salgado immediately suspects Paco of wiping down the bedroom, but lets it go. As Silvia and Paco leave, she sticks a bug on the back of Sara's computer.

SCENE: THE TAKE DOWN

Salgado's bug has revealed that Sara has arranged a meeting for Salazar and Lucas, and they are at the shopping mall, ready for the sting. When Silvia gets wind of this, she bursts into the room.

SILVIA: Call this off right now. You don't any motive for placing Sara under survellience. Yesterday we searched her room, and we didn't find anything! It was clean!

SALGADO: Yes. Clean and tidy. But the bug I placed in the room recorded a conversation that indicates Sara's going to meet up with Lucas and Salazar in less than four minutes.

Salgado presents the clipboard with the transcript of Sara's call to Lucas.

SALGADO: Still think I don't have motive?

Silvia is devastated, but has no choice but to let them proceed.

She and Paco watch in agonized silence as Sara, realizing she is being watched, intentionally causes a bomb scare in the complex, allowing Lucas to escape with Salazar.

Silvia and Paco watch, stricken as Sara is arrested.

End episode.
