In Which Pepa Comes To Her Senses - until Silvia Breaks Her Heart
Recap by Misty Flores

PACO'S HOUSE

While DL is in the bathroom, trying to deal with the fact that he thinks he is going crazy, Paco has his men frantically sneak the chickens out of the house. DL hears the chickens and worries, because remember, everyone keeps telling him there are no chickens. Povedilla tells Paco that DL's boss has called him three times asking about the Gayarre mission and he doesn't know what to say. Paco tells him he and Mariano will take care of it.

He comes out of the bathroom, and Paco and Mariano sit at the table as if nothing has happened. DL asks again about the chickens, but they claim they did not hear any chickens. DL walks away and Paco and Mariano sigh in aggravated relief.

THE BRIEFING ROOM

Montoya has Pepa and Sara seated side by side, and he's laying into Pepa for breaking suspension.

MONTOYA: What the hell were you doing at the gymnasium, Pepa? You're suspended! You only had to sit quietly at home for one week!

Pepa takes it, and says nothing. Though they're still technically mad at each other, Sara can't let her aunt take the blame.

SARA: It was my fault. I asked her to come with me.

Pepa looks at her in surprise.

MONTOYA: Well, you're no one to be asking an agent anything at this precinct. Is that clear?

Pepa sucks in her breath, grateful. Montoya sighs and heads back to the podium. The girls await their verdict.

MONTOYA: Let's see.

He stares at them.

MONTOYA: Good job.

They both glance up in surprise.

MONTOYA: The lesions that were found on the body of Evelyn Garcia coincide exactly with that of someone who has been in an illegal fight.

Pepa and Sara glance at each other, and Pepa gets up from her slouch, listening intently.

MONTOYA: Contusions on her nose, the mandible, her eyes … her arms-

Sara blinks, glances at Pepa, and realizes she needs to be listening. She jumps to imitate her aunt's interested posture.

MONTOYA: -ribs. The most probable explanation is that the people who organized Evelyn's fight are the same ones who organized yours.

Pepa and Sara look at each other in mutual excitement. They've stumbled onto something big.

MONTOYA: Do you know where it's going to be?

PEPA: … No. No, no. They told us that they'd tell us an hour before.

Montoya takes that in.

MONTOYA: Okay.

He comes around the podium to stand in front of them.

MONTOYA: Ladies. We're going.

Pepa and Sara once again share a glance. They jolt up.

MONTOYA: Wait-wait- This is a simple reconnaissance mission. We don't want any mishaps. You're going to take a microphone and you listen. You'll give information on everything. Exits, guards, weapons – everything. Okay? When that happens, we go in, pick up the bad guys and leave.

If it were only ever that simple for these people.

--

PACO'S HOUSE

Paco and Mariano get ready for their cock fighting infiltration. Paco tries to psych himself up as Mariano puts on ten thousand gold chains and proudly shows him some gold teeth.

Paco discovers that the rooster in their cage is half dead. Mariano haltingly explains that he stopped feeding it and giving it water to make him mean. Paco yells at him for doing that to the poor rooster. Now what the hell are they going to do? They can't fight with a dead rooster!

Mariano comes up with the great idea to dope the poor rooster with testosterone and drugs to give him an energy boost. Paco nearly has a panic attack.

--

SHOOTING RANGE

Pepa gets ready to practice her shooting when she glances up to see Aitor coming in. They lock glances.

Glaring, Pepa glances away, and continues getting ready to shoot. Aitor sighs and heads into the stall next to her. As she ignores him, he stares at her, clearly remorseful.

She lifts up her gun-

AITOR: Pepa.

With a sigh, she lowers it, and removes her headphones.

PEPA: Yes?

AITOR: Last night… I might have been a little… harsh with you. What happened was you took me by surprise. You know?

Pepa starts to smile.

AITOR: Don't get the wrong idea. Okay? I haven't changed my mind. [Pepa keeps staring at him] You know… about being the donor. I still think… I'm still saying 'No', Pepa.

Pepa is quiet, but gives him a quiet look of understanding.

AITOR: But I know that last night I wasn't exactly… tactful.

Pepa laughs, and sobers.

PEPA: No, Aitor. The one who didn't have any tact was me. I just… I asked you to be the biological father as if… as if I were asking you for change for the bus.

Aitor doesn't disagree.

PEPA: I know I can't keep pretending that my fix-it campaign will win back the love of my life. Least of all someone like Silvia. I'm an impulsive idiot.

AITOR: Well yes. Yes. That's very true.

PEPA: Excuse me?

He grins at her.

AITOR: You're an impulsive idiot who fucks up a lot, Pepa.

She starts laughing.

PEPA: An impulsive idiot, huh?

She puts on her glasses, ready to shoot.

PEPA: Want to bet something?

AITOR: As long as it's not my semen, whatever you want.

Pepa rolls her eyes good-naturedly. They get ready to shoot.

PEPA: Twenty bucks.

AITOR: No, no, no – Forty. That way I can buy myself a new black wallet. Look-

He grins at her.

AITOR: I'm so scared.

She laughs, and they start shooting.

As they go, Pepa realizes that Aitor is staring at her. Self conscious, she squeezes off another shot. It throws her off.

He smiles smugly at her.

--

PACO'S HOUSE

Mariano concocts a cocktail of cocaine as Paco comes back. Paco complains that Mariano is doing it in plain sight, on the table his father-in-law eats but Mariano says he gets no pleasure in it. He's doing it for the mission. Paco spies Commander Salgado coming up the way. They scramble to get rid of the drug, and Mariano slips and calls Marina 'sweetheart'. Paco yells at him for leading her on.

Paco hides as Mariano lets her in. Marina comes in and happily settles down for a cup of coffee, asking Mariano about the wedding invitation. Mariano watches in horror as Marina takes a huge spoonful of cocaine, licking the spoon.

--

DL'S OFFICE

DL looks up the definition of dementia in his office. Povedilla comes in and asks him how he's doing. Not well. Povedilla sees him going deeper into despair and tries to take his gun away, saying DL asked him to clean it. DL wants it back but fitfully admits he doesn't remember anything. Povedilla asks him to go see a doctor, but DL refuses. Still, he removes the bullets from his gun and gives them to Povedilla for safe keeping.

--

PACO'S HOUSE

Salgado is now tweaking. She's talking a mile a minute. Suddenly she gets sick and starts to barf all over Paco's laundry basket of Lola's clothes. She heads for the bathroom. Paco happily congratulates Mariano on successfully breaking his engagement but Mariano explains that's not exactly what happened. Paco freaks when he realizes Marina puked on Lola's clothes. He reminds Mariano that if he doesn't break it off he's going to end up married.

Flustered and angry, he jerks at his scarf and tells him to get going.

--

THE LAB

Silvia works at a microscope as Sara passes and sees her. Surprised, Sara lets herself in.

SARA: Silvia! What are you doing here? I thought you were suspended.

SILVIA: Yeah, but I couldn't stand being in my house for even one more minute. Look, if they want to kick me out, then let them kick me out.

Sara stares at her in concern.

SARA: And how were you last night?

SILVIA: Well, let's see. Taking into account that the woman I love has publically humiliated me, busted open my lip, and has decided to look for a donor to give me a child? I think I'm doing extremely well.

Sara takes that in and comes around her.

SARA: And what are you going to do? Are you going to talk to her?

SILVIA: No. I didn't plan to.

Sara stares at her sympathetically.

SILVIA: Well, maybe I should, before she shows up at my house with a brand new family.

This is Silvia's defense mechanism – shutting down, and it's hurting Sara to see. She keeps quiet. Silvia turns to her.

SILVIA: You know what? When I lost the baby, it took me months to get over it. But I got over it. And then Pepa showed up, like an elephant in a glass house and she brought it all back. Including my desire to be a mother.

Her eyes are tearing up.

SILVIA: I thought it would be something precious, to have a family with her.

But before she gets too vulnerable – she closes up again.

SILVIA: But no. I'm not going to suffer any longer. I'm an independent, successful woman who's committed to her work. With people who love me and who I love. Like you. I don't need a family.

Aware of just how much Silvia is hurting, Sara comes forward to embrace her.

SARA: Well I am your family, Tita. [Tita is an affectionate way of saying 'aunt', and Sara's pet name for Silvia]

Silvia begins to quietly cry in Sara's arms.

Outside, Aitor passes and stops when he sees Sara comforting Silvia through the lab window. He takes in her devastation.

Sara pulls away and kisses Silvia before she heads for the door.

SILVIA: You have an operation with her, right?

SARA: [nods] This afternoon.

SILVIA: Well give her a knock on the head for me.

Sara pretends to consider it.

SARA: What'll you give me?

SILVIA: 50 Euros.

Sara laughs.

SARA: Okay.

She heads for the door as Silvia somberly looks at the floor. At the doorway, Sara falters and gives Silvia a serious look.

SARA: She loves you.

Aitor hears this and sighs raggedly, completely aware of the truth of that statement. Silvia tears up but holds it together, as Sara closes the door.

As Sara steps out, she sees Aitor.

AITOR: How is she?

They look at Silvia.

SARA: She's a mess. It's so fucked up that people can't have what they want. Don't you think?

Aitor stares at her, more than aware of what that's like.

Sara heads off sadly.

Aitor stares at devastated Silvia, and finally understands why Pepa was so desperate to get pregnant.

--

THE COCK FIGHTS

Paco and Mariano show up at the cockfights with their rooster. They check in with Curtis and Nelson, who are in a surveillance truck outside the establishment.

--

DL'S OFFICE

DL keeps reading about dementia and reads that some people are videotaped to show their illnesses.

He glances outside his office and sees a surveillance camera.

--

THE BOXING MATCH

A door opens. SHADY GUYS pops in.

SHADY GUY: Let's go, ladies. Outside.

Pepa and Sara emerge, dressed in boxing robes. Pepa is working, head down as she pretends to warm up. The crowd behind the fence cheers for the fighters.

Sara is frightened and overwhelmed.

PEPA: Okay, we're in.

MONTOYA AND RITA are in the surveillance van watching the monitor that feeds from the camera that's attached to Pepa's robe. Pepa feeds them information as Sara takes in the scene.

PEPA: Attention. There's an entrance on the right with a driver standing next to a car. He's dressed formally. The way is blocked by fences. There's two security officers. From the hang of their coats, it looks like they're armed.

They pass the boxing ring. The two women inside fight BRUTALLY. Sara WINCES with the force of the punches.

PEPA: Looks like there's a dinner area near the entrance.

MONTOYA: Agreed. Let's activate intervention protocol.

A VAN SCREECHES TO A STOP – from it flood a group of elite officers with guns.

Pepa and Sara stand by the ring and put out their hands to be taped up.

MONTOYA: Ladies – everything is going to be okay.

Rita smiles at him.

MONTOYA: We'll let you know when we're going in.

He calls for Tango 1 and Tango 2 to get into first position.

--

AT THE COCKFIGHTING:

Mariano and Paco look for Gayarre. Curtis reminds them that he could have changed his appearance, and to look for two different colored eyes.

Nelson notices in a photo Gayarre's signature gun. He's impressed.

--

AT THE BOXING MATCH:

Pepa and Sara get taped up. Pepa glances at Sara.

PEPA: Sara. We have to do this right.

Sara nervously nods. She looks impossibly young to Pepa.

PEPA: Sara.

Sara looks up.

PEPA: Forgive me for what I told you yesterday in the gymnasium. It was really harsh.

Sara's face softens and she nods. Pepa gives her a soft smile.

SARA: I hope you'll forgive me for what I've done.

Pepa's smile stalls. She starts to feel dread.

PEPA: Sara, what did you do?

SARA: I told Silvia what you were going to do.

Pepa looks at her, betrayed.

SARA: She's my aunt and I don't want to have secrets with her. I'm sorry.

Pepa, also Sara's aunt, has no choice but to accept that Sara chose Silvia over her. She nods, indicating it's okay.

--

AT THE COCKFIGHTING:

Mariano and Paco are up for cockfighting. Their opponent is a wealthy woman who sits on a velvet chair. Paco immediately recognizes the rooster that was given as a gift for Gayarre.

Paco once again reprimands Mariano for letting Salgado think that she still loves him. Mariano tells him he's just as bad. He refuses to send Lola her clothes because he knows that means she's moving on.

--

DL'S OFFICE

DL goes over the tapes from the security camera. He watches as Curtis and the team cross in front of his office three times. He realizes he's been duped.

--

AT THE BOXING MATCH:

Pepa and Sara warm up. Pepa holds up for hands for Sara to warm up her arms and shoulders, tapping lightly. Pepa is clearly trying to keep from panicking at the idea that Silvia knows about her stupid plan.

PEPA: Why did you tell her?

Sara stalls, looks up at her.

SARA: Someone had to tell her. Silvia had a right to know.

Pepa looks ill.

The OFFICERS prepare to move in.

OFFICER: We're in position.

MONTOYA: Okay, everyone alert. Wait for my signal.

--

AT THE COCKFIGHTING:

Mariano gets ready to take the rooster out of the cage and he realizes with panic that the rooster has croaked. Paco and Mariano try not to panic.

Everyone looks at them impatiently. People start throwing things.

--

AT THE BOXING MATCH:

Sara is now holding her hands up for Pepa. Pepa's mind is on Silvia.

PEPA: How did she take it?

Sara doesn't answer. Her attention is on the crowd around them, as one fighter in the ring starts getting the better of another.

PEPA: SARA. Sara, how did she react?

One fighter has KICKED the other fighter's ass. The woman goes down, a bloody mess. A doctor comes to take the unconscious woman away.

Stunned, Sara and Pepa look at each other in horror. Their time has run out.

The officers get ready.

PACO AND MARIANO duck away from all the thown cups and trash.

The REF instructs Pepa and Sara to get in the ring.

MONTOYA: Okay, in position.

RITA is starting to get nervous.

RITA: Please, Inspector, Please – do it now.

Paco and Mariano are accosted. Nelson freaks out.

NELSON: We have to intervene!

CURTIS: Put away that fucking gun!

Sara and Pepa step into the ring. Montoya gets ready for the raid.

MONTOYA: We go in five…

Sara stands in the middle of the ring, overwhelmed.

MONTOYA: Four…

Sara notices a familiar figure in the corner. She stares.

MONTOYA: Three-

The OFFICERS get ready to move.

Sara GASPS. It's MARIANO AND PACO. They're at the same place!

MONTOYA: Two-

SARA: Stop-stop-everyoneSTOP!

MONTOYA: Stop!Stop!ABORT!ABORT!

The OFFICERS retreat back into their corner.

MONTOYA: Sara, what's happening?

SARA: My Dad and Mariano! They're here!

Pepa stares at her, shocked. Montoya and Rita can now hear Paco's distinctive voice on the mikes. Montoya remembers that Gayarre likes illegal fights.

The operations have collided.

--

IN THE PRECINCT LOCKER ROOM

Aitor is in the shower. He turns off the showerhead and prepares to step out when he catches sight of SILVIA standing in only her bra and underwear in front of the mirror.

He freezes and ducks back in the shower.

After a moment, he peeks back out.

Silvia, unaware she is not alone, is sobbing. She presses her hands to her stomach.

For a moment, she imagines a life growing inside of her.

Her smile fades as she fingers her scar. She begins sobbing again.

Aitor is so distraught at the expanse of Silvia's suffering he doesn't know what to do.

--

AT THE FIGHT

Paco and Mariano take a breath.

PACO: Fuck, Mariano they almost lynched us!

His phone rings. It's MONTOYA.

PACO: Yes. Montoya, look, we're in the middle of an operation. I'll call you back –

MONTOYA: Paco, listen. Our operations have crossed. We're at the same place.

Pepa and Sara remove their robes, stalling for time.

Montoya instructs Paco to change his radio frequency to match his. Paco hangs up.

PACO: Fuck, that was Montoya. We've crossed operations!

In the ring, Pepa puts down her cloak, carefully maneuvering it so the camera can see the ring.

Paco instructs Curtis to change the frequency on the radio.

They lock onto Montoya.

MONTOYA: Okay guys. We are here investigating the murdered boxer. Paco… look up.

He does, and gasps with horror when little Sara looks back at him from the ring.

PACO: What the hell is my daughter doing here!? Montoya get her out of there immediately. NOW!

MONTOYA: Paco- have you located Gayarre? Yes or no!

Paco turns to Mariano.

MONTOYA: Do you or don't you have him, dammit!

He is agonized, making the hard decision.

MONTOYA: Paco, if we can't find him, we can't go in.

PACO: Mariano, you have to go back there and find Gayarre. Now.

MARIANO: But-

PACO: For the little girl!

Mariano nods and runs for the cockfighting.

Sara and Pepa are getting restless.

SARA: What's happening – are they not coming in?

PEPA: They will. It's a matter of minutes.

THE REF: Okay! Let's begin!

Sara and Pepa blanch. They head for the center of the ring. Paco tries not to die from panic.

The ref huddles with the girls.

REF: The only rules are there are no rules. Are we clear?

They nod. Now Pepa is getting nervous.

PEPA: Gonzalo, Gonzalo – we're going to start!

MONTOYA: Stall a couple minutes. Two minutes, girls, please. If we enter before we find Gayarre, we lose him forever.

Pepa isn't happy.

PEPA: SHIT.

TRANSCRIBERS NOTE: Allow me to indulge in a moment of Pepa/Montoya BFF joy that everyone calls Montoya 'Inspector' or 'MONTOYA' in this scene but Pepa calls him by his first name. Aww. BFFS! Moving on.

Mariano has returned to the cockfighting and is looking with Curtis and Nelson at the faces.

He eyes the RICH woman they were supposed to fight earlier. He smiles and says it's a good day for cockfighting, and keeps going.

IN THE RING –

Pepa realizes they're running out of time. She sees Sara's panicked face. She whispers to her niece.

PEPA: Sara.

Sara looks up.

PEPA: We're going to have to fight.

Sara gulps, and immediately looks toward her father, who is trying like hell to keep it together.

MONTOYA: FUCK.

Rita crosses herself.

THE SHOOTING RANGE

Povedilla enters the darkened shooting range looking for DL. He is frightened out of his wits to see DL standing in the dark. DL tells him he wants his bullets back.

Povedilla wavers, but hands back his bullets.

DL tells him that he's feeling more of the same. He's going crazy and crazy people do crazy things. He puts the gun to his head but when Povedilla tries to stop him, he aims the gun at him instead.

--

THE ILLEGAL FIGHTS

Paco is getting more and more agitated.

PACO: Montoya, Montaya! I'm going in!

MONTOYA: Paco stay put, that's a fucking order!

Paco is tortured. As is Rita.

MONTOYA: Paco. Sara is with Pepa. If they're not in any immediate danger the priority is Gayarre.

PACO: Mariano, do you have him!?

MARIANO: Paco, I don't see him! I don't see him!

He keeps frantically looking.

IN THE RING –

The ref starts the announcements.

THE REF: To my right! At 1meter,72 and weighing at 57 kilos, Laura Rellena!

Pepa jumps up and down.

THE REF: And on my right, at 1meter55 and 48 kilos, Inez Osolo!

Sara tries to keep her calm but she's close to freaking.

SARA: Pepa!

Paco watches as the bets are made.

THE REF: Post your bets!

PACO: Mariano, find him DAMMIT!

Sara looks at Pepa imploringly.

SARA: Pepa, we don't even have GLOVES on!

Pepa thinks about it and comes up with a plan.

PEPA: Okay. We spar for a bit, and when I tell you?

She turns to show Sara her good eye.

PEPA: You give me a MEAN right hook on my eye. But don't just make it look real - it has to be real.

Sara is seriously not up to hitting her beloved aunt that hard again.

Montoya and Rita give each other agonized glances, knowing the risk Pepa is taking for her niece and the mission.

Paco has also heard this.

PACO: Montoya, we can't afford to wait. We have to go in, for the love of God, we have to go in, dammit!

MONTOYA: Paco… if he's not there I have to abort the raid.

Rita stares at him, aghast. Montoya notices her horrified look.

MONTOYA: If we don't get him, he'll escape forever!

Rita pleads with him.

THE REF: Let's begin!

The bell rings.

Pepa and Sara head up to each other – but they're hesitant. Pepa glances at the bloodthirty crowd and throws an easy front punch, allowing Sara to duck under it. Sara responds with a weak punch to her side.

Pepa glares at her for her tentativeness.

She goes for two crosses and two hooks, letting Sara weave under them each time, leaving her guard down for Sara to hit her in her face. Again Sara only lands a body shot.

Pepa stares anxiously at the displeased crowd.

PEPA: More blood!

Frightened, Sara looks at the booing crowd.

PEPA: More blood, Sara, dammit!

She goes in again, extending her punch out. Sara weaves under her and pins her arms in the back. Pepa elbows her to break away.

The crowd settles, pleased that the fight is picking up.

It's torture for Paco.

Pepa tries again.

PEPA: Give me a couple punches, and then I'm going to drop my guard. And then you HIT me with as much force as you-

Sara shakes her head immediately. She can't do it. Pepa can't allow her to falter.

PEPA: Sara, please.

She hesitates, then says for inspiration-

PEPA: Remember what I did to your tita.

To Sara, it's an emotional blow – a reminder of the blow she gave Pepa the day before for the love of her preferred aunt Silvia- and a reminder that Pepa knows she picked Silvia over her.

She winces.

Pepa goes in, but drops her guard. Obediently, Sara responds with a hard hit to Pepa's face. Another right hook, and Pepa reels.

The crowd goes wild.

Sara charges with a hard UPPERCUT.

Pepa collapses back. Sara is horrified.

Everyone blanches at the beating Pepa has just taken. Pepa stays down.

Paco is in agony for his little sister.

The bell rings, and medics come for Pepa to drag her out of the ring.

The Ref grabs hold of Sara, but she only has eyes for Pepa.

THE REF: The winner!

Pepa opens her eyes and WINKS at Sara. She's okay.

Sara is relieved, but the crowd is not. They're clearly wondering what the fuck was up with the lame ass fight.

THE REF: Take it easy! Take it easy! The fights will continue.

Pepa is lowered off the ring and towards the 'doctor' who is on call. He's lighting a cigarette and his coat is stained with blood.

Pepa sits up quickly and waves him off with a disgusted frown. She's good.

The crowd BOOS louder.

THE REF: And now! The winner of the fight will challenge the champion Nadia Nerodova!

From the back comes a MONSTER of a woman. An AMAZON on steroids.

Paco and Sara both share mutual 'OH FUCK!' faces as she approaches.

The Ref introduces her as she strips off her robe and reveals her insanely buff body. It's David and Goliath. The Ref goes on to remind the crowd of her triumphant last win against-

THE REF: EVELYN GARCIA!

Oh CRAP. Sara jerks her gaze to Pepa – their murdered woman. Who was beaten to death.

BY THIS WOMAN.

The entire group is horrified at the REAL danger that Sara is now in.

Rita shakes her head, pleading with Montoya.

Sara stares up and up and up at her opponent.

--

SHOOTING RANGE

Povedilla is terrified as he tries to reason with DL. He tries to reassure DL that he's not crazy, but DL cocks his gun and points it at Povedilla, and demands to know who orchestrated the plan to drive him nuts.

He's out of control, and Povedilla sinks to his knees, begging DL not to kill him. He was under orders. DL demands to know from who.

Povedilla admits it was Paco and Mariano.

POVEDILLA: But please don't kill them, Don Lorenzo, please. Don't kill anyone.

DL lowers his gun, overwhelmed.

--

THE ILLEGAL FIGHTS

Paco begs Montoya to give the order – Sara will get killed otherwise.

Montoya, conflicted, removes his jacket.

PACO: Montoya…

MONTOYA: Paco, you have to stall. You need to stall the fight somehow to give Mariano time to locate Gayarre.

Paco sees the better and gets an idea. He asks Mariano where the money is from the gas station. Mariano says it's in his pocket.

Paco runs to the bookie and places a last minute bet on Sara.

The organizers roll their eyes but they stop the fight.

Mariano accidentally gets too close to a guy and nearly gets his head beaten off. He backs off.

The ref is ready to call the fight. Paco places another bet.

They try again-

Paco bets again. Montoya tells him to calm down – he's betting government money.

Paco checks in with Mariano. Mariano tells him not to pressure him. He's going as fast as he can.

The Ref CLOSES THE BETS.

Terrified, Sara tries to smile at Nadia. Nadia doesn't exactly smile back. Sara gulps.

The bell rings. Sara tosses Pepa a terrified glance and puts her guard up, quaking.

She tries to throw a punch. Nadia just catches it and nearly breaks her fist before letting go. Pepa watches, terrified.

Nadia starts SWINGING. Sara uses what little advantage she has: her tininess, to avoid the hits and tries to beat at Nada's ribs. Nadia grabs hold of her head and pushes her off.

Nadia lands a bruising punch on Sara's face. Sara reels.

Pepa puts her head in her hands. Paco nearly has a heart attack.

The crowd goes wild. Sara is now bleeding heavily from her nose.

She shakily gets up. Once again her only choice is to use her speed to avoid Nadia's devastating punches.

Paco begs Montoya to intercede. Montoya tries to keep him calm.

Mariano keeps looking, and accidentally bumps into the RICH WOMAN from before, spilling her things. She's annoyed as hell.

An extravagant gun tumbles out of her purse. NELSON recognizes it as Gayarre's gun.

Mariano bends down to help her with her things.

SARA suffers another punch from Nadia.

Nelson tries to get Curtis' attention. Curtis turns to him, annoyed, but finally sees the gun.

As does Mariano. He glances up and sees two different colored eyes GLARING at him.

SARA gets elbowed across the face.

Mariano, Curtis and Nelson realize that Gayarre's had a sex change operation as Gayarre's bodyguards race her away.

Sara has resorted to trickery, standing just behind Nadia's eyesight and trying to keep out of her range by sticking to her back.

Mariano exclaims that they found her – they have a greenlight. Montoya wants confirmation. Curtis gives it.

MARIANO: Give the greenlight, Montoya, fuck! We're losing her!

Montoya goes for it.

MONTOYA: Tango1, Tango2 NOW! Intervene NOW – Cover all the exits!

The cops come in from all corners. Mariano pulls his gun and goes after Gayarre.

They move fast- but most of the crowd is still riveted on the fight.

Sara gets her head caught in Nadia's palm, and she now swings futilely.

Pepa watches in horror, not realizing that Gayarre is trying to escape right behind her.

The special forces team intercepts the bodyguards. As they tangle, Gayarre tries to go the other way, but Mariano is coming with his gun and his badge.

Pepa finally sees what's happening, as Gayarre pulls her gun and faces down with Mariano.

MARIANO: Freeze! Put the gun down!

Gayarre points it to his heart. Pepa processes the situation, and realizes what's happening.

Watching Sara flail, Paco can't help himself and rushes the boxing ring, pushing aside the attendant.

Mariano still faces off with Gayarre.

MARIANO: You're under arrest! You need to-

But Pepa's on Gayarre, startling her and easily taking control of Gayarre's gun, wrenching her arm up behind her.

Paco tries to intervene as Nadia SWINGS – and catches a MEAN punch on the side of his head. He flies back.

The officers in the van wince.

Sara crawls to her father.

SARA: Dad! Dad are you okay?! Dad!

Dazed, Paco looks up and stares adoringly at his little girl. Relieved, she helps him up.

Pepa holds Gayarre's gun to her head as she glares at Mariano.

GAYARRE: You're dead, fucker. You're dead!

The officers in the van exhale in relief. Curtis clasps hands with Nelson, who has finally earned his respect.

Rita gives Montoya a kiss. Montoya smiles.

Held up by Sara, Paco shares a smile of thanks with Mariano, who smiles proudly. He faints again.

Pepa, now the proud handler of Gayarre's fancy gun, glances up toward her niece as the special forces officers lead Gayarre away.

As they lock glances, she smiles proudly at Sara.

Sara gives her a loving, grateful smile in return.

Pepa, beaten and bruised physically and emotionally in the last two days, take a precious moment to breathe.

--

CACHIS

'Friends Until The End' by Gareth Johnson (cause I know someone will ask ;) ) plays as Pepa, now sporting two black eyes, sits alone at the bar at Cachis with a bottle of Tequila as the Cachi's manager (I need to learn her name eventually) sweeps up, preparing to close.

She takes a stinging shot of tequila and broods sadly. She looks at her list of potential fathers, and disgusted with it, just crumples it up in a ball and throws it away.

She thinks about what she told Sara the day before.

PEPA: I've been with a lot of people and in the end you realize that you can only be with one.

SARA: That's really beautiful Sara, but you have tell that to her.

Pepa considers this, gathering her resolve, when SILVIA herself walks into Cachis.

She stares at Pepa, clearly conflicted, clearly still affected by Pepa.

The Cachi's Manager notices and quickly walks up to the bar, unfolding her apron and heading to the back to give them privacy. When Pepa looks at her curiously, she motions silently behind her.

Pepa turns to see Silvia, who now shifts painfully, battling her affection for Pepa when she sees the bruised and battered face of her lover light up.

Pepa rises immediately and goes to her, but Silvia has come here with something to say, and she rushes it out quickly.

PEPA: Silvia-

SILVIA: Sara told me that you're looking for a father to get yourself pregnant.

Pepa stops short. She shakes her head, tries to explain.

PEPA: it's just that-

But Silvia just goes on.

SILVIA: Look, I don't know, Pepa, if you're doing it because you're stupid, or because you want to try to make it seem like nothing's happened, or because you want to fuck me because I can't have them.

Pepa is stricken. She shakes her head. Tries again to explain-

PEPA: No-

But Silvia isn't interested in hearing her reasons.

SILVIA: No, it doesn't matter. Honestly. I don't care. And I'm not going keep being your girl.

This is what Pepa has been so afraid of. Immediately her eyes tear up, and her head shakes again, but Silvia plunges on.

SILVIA: Pepa, you're the last person in the world with whom I'd want to have a family, and do you know why?

PEPA[devastated]: Silvia… no-

SILVIA: You left home when you were 18 years old because you were tired of your parents. And you came back when you were 29. At 30, you convinced me that you loved me and at 31, you want your independence, do you know what that signifies, Pepa? That you can't take care of anyone but yourself.

Stricken, Pepa shakes her head blindly.

Silvia can't look at her. Her gaze falls to the floor.

SILVIA: No, Pepa, no. This is over.

PEPA: [quietly begging] Silvia, no.

Silvia just walks away without looking at her.

PEPA: Silvia… Silvia please!

She's destroyed.

PACO'S HOUSE

Paco also cries for his lost Castro woman as he battles with himself, packing up Lola's clothes and scratching her maiden name on the address label.

--

CACHI'S

Pepa is left alone with bottle of tequila, desolate at losing the love of her life.

She sobs.

Paco's House

Paco answers the door for Aitor, and shows him the boxes to mail for him. He struggles to give up the boxes, but Aitor tells him there's no problem until he looks and sees who the boxes are for.

He stares sympathetically at Paco as he walks out. DL walks in as Aitor leaves.

DL asks Paco why he tried to make him think he was crazy. Paco answers that he hasn't been well since he was hit on the head, and DL refused to admit anything was happening. Paco wants the best for him and the best is for DL to go to the hospital and get his head checked.

DL accepts it and sinks on the couch. He tells Paco of an Inspector who was diagnosed with cancer who was given three years to live, and died in five months. He tells Paco he's not ready to begin the countdown to his death. He's not ready. He doesn't want to go.

DL starts to cry. Paco tells him everything will be okay. The two men embrace fiercely.

IN THE DOWNSTAIRS PATIO

Pepa, drunk and desolate, tries to fit a key into the small hole of a place she's currently staying at. The key drops.

Pepa has no strength to pick it up. It's just one more thing and it's too much.

She collapses against the wall, sobbing heart wrenching sobs, unable to move or think beyond the pain.

Aitor, coming down the stairs with Paco's boxes, sees her crying. He drops the boxes and heads over.

AITOR: Pepa it's okay.

Awkwardly, he tries to pat her. Pepa is a shell, trembling.

Unsure what to do, Aitor leans down and grabs her keys, and carefully tries to fit them back into her hand.

Pepa is numb with pain. She walks away from Aitor.

AITOR: Pepa.

She stops. Turns slowly to look at him. Aitor can't take the pain on her face.

AITOR: Come on.

He embraces her, and at the friendly comfort, Pepa sobs anew, clutching onto him desperately.

Aitor holds her, feels her falling apart, and remembers Silvia's breakdown.

He inhales raggedly.

Pepa stops sobbing, and is now just numb and lost. Aitor stares at her unseeing face, and makes a decision.

He swallows hard. Leans in. Hesitates, and then presses a kiss against Pepa's mouth.

At the contact, Pepa blinks, comes slightly out of her fog to stare at him.

After a moment, desperate to feel something other than pain, Pepa reverts to old habits and kisses him back.

The kisses build momentum, as Pepa lets her body take over her destroyed spirit. They fall against the potted plant and laugh at the near miss.

AITOR: Easy, easy.

People move around upstairs. They shush each other. Aitor tentatively holds her, Pepa pulls him in closer. He pushes her to the wall.

Pepa spies the open door. She arches her brow at him.

Aitor falters. This is the point of no return.

Pepa pulls him, kisses away his hesitation. Soon they're tumbling into the door, pulling off jackets and shirts.

OUTSIDE

Sara walks past the studio, heading for her apartment, when she spies the box with Lola's name on it.

She jolts away from the window, shocked and overwhelmed.
