Defying Gravity
By Les Miserables 1998

Something has changed within me, something is not the same. I'm through with playing by the rules of someone else's game. Too late for second-guessing, too late to go back to sleep. It's time to trust my instincts, close my eyes and leap.

So if you care to find me, look to the western sky. As someone told me lately, everyone deserves a chance to fly.

Alex remained still for what seemed like an eternity. Had Olivia really just been here? Alex felt the weakness in her knees and the flutter in her stomach. Oh, yeah, she was here. And she was gone!

"Oh, shit! Oliva!" Alex gathered her thoughts and ran after the detective. No way was she letting her get away. Alex had been so stubborn, so blind, that she had nearly lost everything.

"Everything?" Alex thought. Is that what Olivia was to her? Everything? Damn straight.

Alex ran down the stairs and onto the sidewalk. She frantically looked side to side for her detective.

"Fuck!" She said out loud. Then suddenly out of the corner of her eye, she saw Olivia a block away, just about to get into a taxi.

Alex sprinted like her life depended on getting to Olivia. Her life did depend on this.

"Olivia!" Alex shouted. "Olivia, please wait!"

Alex reached her target and grabbed Olivia by the arm just as she was getting into the cab.

Olivia looked confused, but didn't pull away. Instead, she let Alex pull her into the most sensual kiss she had ever experienced.

With only a wave of her hand, Olivia motioned for the cab to leave.

Eventually, Olivia broke the kiss and stared at Alex. Alex stared back, a slight grin on her face.

"Comeback upstairs," Alex said pulling Olivia along. "We need to talk."

The two women entered Alex's apartment in a much different manner than before. This time Alex was the aggressor, and Olivia simply followed.

Alex led Olivia to the couch, her lips never leaving the detective's. Alex's hands played with Olivia's hair and gently caressed her face. The kisses grew more frenzied, as the weeks without each other caught up to them.

"Olivia." Alex moaned. "We need to talk."

It was very clear that the older woman had nothing to say, at least not with words. Olivia began to unbutton Alex's blouse. Alex tried to get her attention again by saying the detective's name, but Olivia was persistent in her mission to get Alex's shirt off.

Alex summoned all of her willpower and pulled away from her lover. Alex got up from the couch and walked to the middle of the room. A safe distance, she thought, from her desire.

"Olivia," Alex began. "I want you so much right now, but we have to talk first. Too much has happened during the last few weeks for us to ignore."

Olivia stared at Alex trying to concentrate on each word she said. But, damn, was it difficult. Alex was standing there in her skirt with her blouse hanging open. "Focus, Olivia. The sooner you talk, the sooner you can have your girl."

"Okay." Olivia nodded in agreement.

Alex pulled her blouse together, took a seat in a chair across from Olivia and began to speak.

"Liv, I have done so many things wrong with us, I know that. I got scared, and I pushed you away. I made the decision for both of use, never giving you a chance to fight. I'm so sorry for that." Alex stumbled over the words. She HAD to convince Olivia to give her another chance.

Olivia said nothing.

Alex continued. "I thought my career could fulfill me, and that I could choose. I have been so miserable without you. And when I thought you were with someone else…," Alex paused. "I love you, and if I have to choose, then I choose you."

Olivia sat on the couch, stunned. Alex had just said the only words Olivia ever wanted to hear.

"What changed your mind?" Olivia wondered aloud.

Alex hesitated. She chose her words carefully. "I decided to follow my heart for a change." She smiled at Olivia.

The women sat and looked at each other for a moment, then Alex made a move back to the couch, back to Olivia.

Alex rested her hands on Olivia's hips. "Please say that you forgive me, that you'll give me another chance."

Olivia looked into the blue eyes of her lover. "Baby, you have said everything I need to hear."

She kissed Alex gently on the lips. "But, you do not have to choose between your career and me. You can, and will have both." Olivia winked at Alex to let her know that everything would be okay.

Alex let out a sigh of relief. "I will not let you go ever again. God, I promise."

Olivia said nothing. Instead, she stood and pulled Alex up with her. Smiling, Live led Alex to the bedroom.
